World Cup Viewer’s Guide: The US aims for a repeat of the excitement of 1950
DOHA, Qatar (AP) – The hastily assembled American squad was a ragtag group that included a postman, a gravedigger, a dishwasher and a schoolteacher when the United States first faced England at the World Cup. The 1-0 win in 1950 is often compared to the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” win over the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Olympics as one of the greatest moments in American sports history. The disparity between the two national soccer teams isn’t nearly as great 72 years later, as England and the United States take on Friday’s Group B. Wales play Iran, Qatar meet Senegal and the Netherlands meet Ecuador in other games.
England wary of USA over World Cup excitement
DOHA, Qatar (AP) – England scored six goals in their World Cup opener against Iran, but it was the two conceded that worried coach Gareth Southgate and gave hope to the United States. The tournament has already produced some shocking results, including Saudi Arabia’s win over Argentina and Japan’s excitement over Germany. A USA win over England might not be on the same scale as Saudi Arabia, but against one of the tournament favourites, Gregg Berhalter’s side are undeniably the underdog.

We’ll know more tomorrow.” Brazil coach Tite says he is “confident that Neymar will continue playing at the World Cup” but Lasmar says it’s too early to comment on the extent of the injury.
White enters and focuses on giving Jets a “fighting chance”.
FLORHAM PARK, NJ (AP) — Mike White has already made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So, stepping in for a struggling Zach Wilson and trying to spark a stagnant offense doesn’t seem like much of a problem for the New York Jets’ new starting quarterback. White will face Chicago on Sunday just over a year since he briefly became a headline-grabbing folk hero. With fans chanting his name in a win over Cincinnati in October 2021, White set an NFL record for most passes completed in a player’s first start at 37. He says his focus is on beating the Bears and giving the Jets a chance.
